Mark,

I'm looking hard at the EdgePro Essential Kit ... primarily to help me thin consistently/accurately behind the edge as my many Jknives are requiring more metal removal. With my Panvise and digital angle gauge, I feel I can get very good final results, primarily using slow, trailing edge strokes. I'm not so consistent moving in both directions, and especially with the strokes required to thin longer, taller blades.

How do you feel about the Apex for this speciifc task ?? Is the 'Essential Kit' my best choice for thinning? Please tell me briefly about the load spring and drill stop collar ... how/when I would use them.

This is tough choice given the investment in stones and the Panavise jig. Since I would never be sharpening daily, even weekly, I find it hard to maintain the skills required to reprofile blades as needed. You offer me very practical and realistic advice and your perspective will be most helpful.

For any follow-up, I will use the Forum and expect some useful comment there.

Thank-you,
Tom

Hi Tom,

The essential set would be fine for your use but the ideal item to thin knives is a atoma plate since they last longer than the stones and don't dish at all. It's expensive but worth it if you do a lot of thinning. Otherwise the beston 500 will work fine.

There are demo videos on the spring and drill stop collar pages that will show you why they're included. The collar is important, the spring is just a convenience thing.

Got it. Had already picked up on Atoma 140 benefits and would add it to the Kit ..... assume you meant 140 and not 400 ?

Thanks,

I checked today and the Atoma 140 and 400 are in stock for the EP. I only know this since I bought the other two and they are now out of stock and I wanted the 400 in the order as well.
