My brush is beginning to smell 'musky'. Is there a way to clean it without damaging the bristles?

I'm assuming it's a badger hair brush. Here's a video from Ems Place.

Johnson's baby shampoo every time you feel it's not lathering well. The exact frequency will depend on whether you use preshave oil, and the find of soap that you use.

Do not use shampoos that have softener/conditioner in it!

Since you mention a musky smell, I wonder if you are not letting the brush dry thoroughly before each use. Is this your only brush? Is the brush damp when you go to use it? If so, you might consider picking up a second brush, or letting your present one dry in a less humid environment.
