Pretty similar thoughts as Shaun and Adam have. I tend to start at the heel more for issues of angle control. If you thoroughly remove a scratch pattern with a finer one, the direction of the removed scratch pattern is pretty irrelevant. For coarser grits, perhaps there is a small effect on push cutting, but really not enough to concern me.

Changing directions helps determine which grit is causing which scratches - a useful technique.
