I know I know. Not exactly gourmet but it makes me and my gf reminisce. I'm trying to eat less meat these days and looking for a recipe using turkey or chicken. Most I've found are flavorless requiring lots of salt to bring it up but we're also trying to eat less salt. Yes, we have reached that point. Any recipes for a sloppy joe alternative that is still flavorful?

I could give you a picture of black bean soup with chipotle and tomatillo but it just looks like brown water. Melampus is correct, I am looking for a 'healthy' version of sloppy joe. Can I just substitute chopped chicken or turkey and reduce the salt? I need to bump up other flavors though is my guess. Thoughts?

XO <> I'm sorry I'm so busy; I still owe someone else an important response, but time... time.. time. :|

Quick answer is, yes.

Instead of using salts, you can use Dulse or Kelp as your "salt". They offer ample concentrations of Iodine, a necessary mineral, as well. Be careful of salt content in your tomato product... you can make your own ketchup to control salt. You can intensify flavors by oven drying tomatoes well, and making a tomato paste from that. You can up your spice contents to keep it interesting. Really, what's unhealthy... the fat in the ground meat, sugars if incorporated, & the salt if you're sensitive?

Use white meat poultry w/low fat content (grinding your own is so much better), and kick up the flavors around it. Incorparate avocado on the sandwich if you're looking for the creaminess one gets on the palette from some fat content.

Quick answer.

I'm guessing you looked at the title, though of the last sloppy joe you had, thought this would be delicious and were disappointed xD

I felt the same way :(

You can replace the meat and go vegan sloppy joes with the use of lentils!
