Yea, I agree that a stone like an Aoto would be an ideal middle grit stone after a 1k or even 2k synthetic. People have been using naturals long before synthetics became available. An advantage of a natural stone is that it SPANS a wide grit range as the mud goes from initial coarse grit to a more refined grit, whereas a synthetic is a narrow range. In fact after the Aoto edge you might find that this works for you as a final finish.

I have also heard the constant change in the grit range as the stone wears creates a subtly different edge on each knife.

Does this mean, a natural 4K with have a toothier, longer lasting edge than a synthetic 4K because of this varying range?

THanks.
