Wow surprised on the Stone negativity. While not my favorite definitely won't turn one down (I really do love Arrogant Bastard). I think right now my favorite San Diego beer is Green Flash West Coast IPA. But that might just be cause it's my most recent find.

What Nor. Cal IPA blows Stone away? (Hopefully i can get it out here in Jersey)

Sorry to Umberto for highjacking the thread a bit...

Darkstar - I was born and raised in San Diego (still live here), worked in food and beverage industry from late 80s to 2000. I know folks involved in the starting days of both Stone and Ballast Point, who both started in 1996. My restaurant was one of the first to carry Stone on tap. I had 3 handles at home, and they usually all had a stone product on them (I was getting the 5g corny kegs at cost, which was less than the materials to home brew the stuff). Needless to say, I was quite fond of Stone.

But as the craft beer scene grew, and breweries worked hard to refine and craft different (and by my opinion, better) beers, Stone worked hard to open a restaurant and distribute nationally. At the time Pale Ale and Smoked Porter came out, there wasn't a ton in San Diego to compete with it. So they were among the best (IMHO) that I could get. But when more beers trickled into San Diego from out of county, and more breweries opened up, that changed.

What is best is inherently subjective. At pub, I almost always gravitate towards an IPA that I haven't tried yet. If not that, then a stout or a porter on nitro and/or one I haven't tried yet. If not that, then I go for an IPA I rarely get on tap. But, hey, that is just my style.

Green Flash Imperial and West Coast are among my favorite local IPAs. If I am looking for a big IPA, Ballast Point Sculpin is also a favorite. If you ever get a chance to try a Hess IPA, grab it. My current favorite IPA local brewery.

As for Nor Cal, again, subjective. But my favorite, all-time favorite, beer is Pliny the Younger from Russian River Brewing Company. For everyday drinking, I can be found to grab a Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA more often than any other. Both are brewed in/near Santa Rosa - Nor Cal. So I don't know if I can agree with Umberto, but I can't disagree either!

Sculpin is all types of pure awesomeness.

I really dig most stuff by 21st Amendment as well. Marooned on Hog Island and Monk's Blood are 2 of my all time favorites.
