Here is what I'd suggest. Use the knife until you feel like you just aren't happy with its sharpness. Normally this would be when you (me) would give it a quick touch up on the stones. Instead pull out the strops and before and after using them touch/pat the edge with the pad of your fingers, lightly of course. When I do this after stropping it just puts a smile on my face and you are good to go again. I seem to notice a bigger difference after the first loaded balsa strop than I do from balsa to butt FWIW.
