Yeah, gifting knives in many cultures is considered bad luck, mostly for the recipient. Chinese superstitions are everywhere and yes, knives or even scissors given as a gift is thought to symbolize cutting ties, or cutting their good luck aka sending the recipient bad mojo. The Japanese probably borrowed this superstition from the Chinese. As you guys mentioned, gifting a knife with a coin attached allows the recipient to "buy" the knife and not have any negative effects.

Though in the case of the 5 yen coin attached to new Masakage knives I think it's just a nice gesture to wish their customers some good fortune as a thanks for purchasing one of their knives. Instant 5 yen rebate

No worries, thanks for sharing.

I have Two coins, the first from the Yuki Bunka and the second from the Shimo Honesuki. I have them attached to a couple of zippers on my Ultimate Edge Deluxe Knife Bag. I'm waiting for the day when someone is able to recognize them and asks to see my Masakages. I'm sure I'll get a few more coins to continue adorning the bag with'em (strictly an ego stroke at this point) but I most definitely want one to be from a Kujiri. :D
