I think I will stick to whetstones. That's where my passion is besides making food and working with knives. I like the feel of the of metal on the stone. It seems natural to me.

A good(cheaper) alternative to the atoma 140 is a DMT extra extra course plate. It will help with major repairs and also flatten stones. All the recommendations are good. You can't really go wrong. I am quickly learning technique has more to do with it than the stones. for my starter set I went with a dmt xxc, 400, 1k, and 5k. I also picked up the deburring block, but there are many other things you probably have around your house you can deburr with.
