I cook for fun at home. I'm making my first 'real' knife purchase. I'm looking at the Tojiro DP Gyuto 210mm and the Tojiro DP Damascus. I need advice/opinions on whether it would be worth the extra money for the Damascus blade. What are the pros and cons of the Damascus blade?

Thanks

not worth it imo, the Damascus is there for looks. if you like it then I would say go for it but it adds nothing in terms of performance
before you get the tojiro make sure you look at the fujiwaras, they are a bit thinner behind the edge and have better f+f overall. If you wanna try wa-handles take a look at marks Richmond artifex wa, same steal as the fujiwaras but nice wa handle

Whether or not any knife is worth the price is highly subjective. The regular Tojiro DP is good knife and a great introduction to J-knives. The same can be said for Fujiwara knives. I haven't handled the Tojiro Damascus so I can't comment on that knife directly. However, at $150 you are very close in price to some of this forum's favorite performing knives.

Help us help you... please answer the following questions. Please include any other information that might be helpful as well (specific things are you looking for, cutting style, etc.)
1. Are you right handed?
2. What type of knife are you interested in (gyuto, nakiri etc..)
3. What size knife are you looking for?
4. Do you prefer carbon or stainless steel?
5. Do you prefer a western handle or a Japanese handle?
6. How much did you want to spend?
7. Do you know how to sharpen?

Thanks for the feedback. I opted to go for the Tojiro F-808 and not the Damascus.

I agree with the sentiment above, for the extra money, there are other knives I would look at first.

But, for an entry level knife, at a hard to beat price, the DP is an outstanding choice. Have fun!
