I have the Shapton Glass Stone starter set (1k and 4k) and have been very happy with them. What would be a good progression up from there in grit? Or should I go from 4k to stropping?

What stone, strop, or combination would you recommend after the 4k Shapton GS?

Thanks!

I strop on balsa with 1u CBN after my 4k GS. That's where I keep most of my knives but will got to 8k just for kicks sometimes and a series of strops.

What Jeff said...
When I go to 8k after my 4k SG. I use either 8k Shapton or the Snow White stone. Followed by CBN on balsa. I prefer the Snow White, but if you like the glass and the splash and go, the Shapton is good too.

For stone progression, many recommend a 2x to 3x spacing for stones. So 8k-12kish, depends on the stones and the application.

For knives, 4k to strops would be fine.

It is looking like maybe a GS 8k, 3x11 Balsa stop and CBN spray.

What CBN spray would be a good start after a 4k or 8k GS?

How does the Balsa compare to Kangaroo or Nano cloth strops?

So 4k is 4 microns and 8k is 2 microns, so something finer than the equivalent stone is recommended. So 1 micron is 16k. For a first strop I would go with a 1 micron CBN or to tune it a bit finer go with 1.5 microns (12k) after the 4k and 0.75 or 24k after the 8k.
This would be a 3x jump between the stone and the strop.

Ken what strop material would you recommend to go with your 1 micron CBN spray?

Balsa, kangaroo, horse but, Nano?
