Thank you everybody for the generous praise. Ive made about a dozen or more and feel like I've dialed in my process and style. They are a real joy to make, and are one of the reasons I keep buying more knives. Plus it's fun experimenting with the many different types of lumber available.

Coachnj, my general thoughts on making a saya is that it's fun and people should try it. For me, it's a chance to play with different types of wood, often exotic types. It offers the opportunity for customizing without having to modify the knife. Some knives I'll rehandle with a simple two wood handle if it's a crappy handle with the plastic falling off, and I'll get a little customizing like that, but usually knives are just fine the way they are made. Sayas you can go anywhere with your design ideas. It is also the perfect home for knives not currently in use, perfect for storing, perfect for transport and perfect for starting your shift off right by drawing your knife gracefully from the saya.

Simply making a saya is fun, and there are many joys derived from using knife with a saya.

My thoughts on how to make one is a bit difficult to explain. I've seen many types of construction and methods, and after a bit of thought, I went ahead with what I thought was the right way to do it. I prefer to make a saya from a single piece of split wood with a cavity hollowed out from one side. I use the machinery and hand tools that are available to me to accomplish this. If all I had was some hand tools, I could see the successful construction of a saya being completed with a saw, a hand plane, a chisel, some way to clamp it together when gluing up, and a file and sandpaper to finish.

Thanks for the thoughts! It seems like a nice summer project to see what happens. I'm more of a metal guy than a wood guy but I'm always happy to try something.
