Searched, but couldn't find much.

Looking for folks with octagonal or oval handles for following style knives. Width and height measurements at butt and top would be great. Length from butt to top too. SAE or metric, either is fine.

150mm petty
150mm deba
270 suji
240 wa
270 wa
300 yanagi(ba)

Thanks.

Paul

Socal - you can look at most of the Quick Look videos I do on the Wa handled knives. I normally measure each handle circumference at the ferrule/main handle junction and put that on the spec sheet. I don't take other measurements.

The standard measurement I get on most 210/240/270 Gyutos is about 3"/75-76mm. Some are slightly smaller, some are larger.

The Deba's frequently have handles larger than 3" (at least the ones I've had in hand).

TAZ (Tim) should be able to give you some good info on measurements and amount of taper.

I stole this off the internet, but I don't remember where, so I can't give a citation.

We recommend the following handle lengths for the respective blade lengths:
Blade Handle
120mm - 110-120mm
150mm - 120-125mm
180mm - 125-135mm
210mm - 135-140mm
240mm - 140-145mm
270mm - 145-150mm
300mm - 150-155mm
330mm - 155-165mm

ETA: After reading again, I'm not sure I understood the original question.

Steve, thanks. I will take a look at some and get some idea of 'average' circumference.

Himself, great list. I actually wanted length as well as other dimension, but forgot to put it in my OP. Edited that, but you gave me info I needed.

For the 240 & 270 wa knives....do you mean gyuto's? Suji's would have different measurements typically, so a clarification would help.

If I ever remember to, I'll measure several I have and get back to this thread.

LOL. I meant gyuto. Typed too fast. Poor preview. My apologies.

150 petty
150 deba
240 gyuto
270 gyuto
270 suji
300 yanagi

Got some nice hardwoods (cocobolo, burmese blackwood, burmese rosewood, bocote, wenge), been researching what will work and how to treat it (seems most would benefit from stabilization, WSSI appears to be the pick of most), and a shop with lots of carpentry tools. Thought I would have some fun with wa handles. Might turn out great. Might not. Never know until you try. I won't be putting the pros out of business any time soon though!

Soooo tired now, had a rough day - have some cool measurements for a 210 & 240 Wa - actually customized on my units after much modification to source the "right" feel..based on a pinch grip, as most Wa's are slightly too long IMHO.

Will post when alive.....

:)
