Exactly!

Shun makes a good product no doubt, they are sharp out of the box and for most people very easy to find. I like my shuns, there is nothing wrong with them. However it is noted that you can get better knives for the price.

I would much rather someone spend money on a shun than miracle blade, ronco or whatever gimmicky knife you see on tv.

From a home cooks perspective I don't have anything bad to say about them. When I started cooking a few years ago I was give a wusthof classic as a first knife. I wasn't too happy with its six inch size (yes in some cases bigger is better :) ) so iooked around locally for a different knife. I settled on a 7 in shun classic santoku. I think I paid $100 at the time and that seemed like a crazy amount of money to me. Long story short, the difference in performance was significant and I started looking into japanese knives. Next thing I know I found this site and I'm about 6 knives deep. I think shun has its place, maybe not for the knife nut but they are probay much better than most of the population will ever use.

Me too!

I've never had any real issue with Shuns other than price. I used to drool over them because they are in all honesty VERY nice looking knives, and I love Kershaw knives which is another big name under the KAI banner (along with Zero Tolerance tactical knives) but unlike Kershaw the Shun stuff never seemed too reasonable in price vs. what you get. That being said, I believe the value is in the eye of the buyer. If the buyer feels they got their money's worth with the product, then in the end that is all that matters. So if I found one at a price I felt was worth paying, I'd buy one. Or if someone bought me one as a gift I would happily receive it and be grateful for it. I just wouldn't pay full price for them, and that was true even before I learned what I have from this forum and my recent experiences with Japanese knives. lol

They are a popular offering and in many cases pretty good knives. I see a few of them from time to time. They seem to come to me in bunches.
