Working in the back today, prep shift.

I had my perfectly find stainless gyuto out on the cutting board while I was in the washroom, however a co-worker decided to use the carbon steel Naikiri in the knife guard just above it, wiped it off and placed it back without drying it, by the time I noticed it had rusted a tad. :/ :(

So this is probably my fault, well no it's entirely my fault but why can't people leave shit alone. I know it's only surface rust so I could grind it off or use some bar keepers friends, but it's irritating.

Anyone else have stories about co-workers or family and friends abusing your fine cutlery?

I had a co-worker grab my masakage koishi gyuto from my board when my back was turned and he broke the tip of the heel off. about 1~1/2 a centimeter. The whole incident happened in maybe 15 seconds. Oh yeah, he was cutting a steak. Not sure how he managed that.

Happens all the time. I had to hide my carbon knives because people always touch them when they get stuff out of my kit and I don't find them for hours and they look like someone barfed on them. Bits of fish, cabbage, quite nasty.

it sounds as if they do a bit more than "touch" them.

I would be greatly pissed about such antics in a so-called "professional" environment.

My coworkers always wonder why I only leave certain knives at work in our assigned knife blocks...this thread is exactly why. I don't trust anyone.

My co-workers regularly grab whatever knife is out on my board to open boxes and cut through plastic ties. I keep a pair of scissors on my tray for exactly those things, but do they ever grab those? Noooo....

While I'm not a professional chef, I have known people that seem to think "OOOoooo... this looks expensive! I'll use it!" lol

You don't have to work in a kitchen to have to keep an eye on your coveted tools. I know guys that could borrow a hammer and tear it up.
