I am considering a digital microscope and looking at the VEHO on the web site. It seems to have 20x OR 400x and nothing in between. Is this normal? For a zoom capability is that normally a lot more expensive? For knife edges are two settings like this standard? Another thing is my grandson will be 4 next month so if I get something it may be something he will use also in school. I don't guess he will need anything like this yet though. I found one also that only goes to 200x. Is that high enough to tell me what is needed regarding scratch patterns, burrs, etc.? Any info is appreciated but FYI I wouldn't pay much more than $65 unless it would be useful for more than knife edges. Less money is great of course but I don't want to spend $30 only to be dissatisfied and then spend $65 or so later. I've done this before and felt stupid every time. Does anyone have the VEHO on this site? Thanks for any help.

Jack

I have the veho , indeed it only does 400x or 20x , no in between. On that note with some practice and some patience you can extract some pretty good images from it.

All the micrographs I post around here are taken with mine.

I have it as well. It is a great value. There is a slight learning curve to using it. I was frustrated at first by having to refocus slightly as I moved my knives or razors to check the whole length. It helps if you securely fasten the base to something. I had mixed feelings about it when I first got it. I knew it was a good value, but it took some time playing with it to become proficient at using it.

Based on my web research, the VEHO appears to be the standard in its price range. Again base on what I've read, the AM2011 Dino-Lite Basic (http://www.dino-lite.com/products_list_ ... te%20Basic) is a better scope - 20 to 50 variable magnification, 200x max magnification, superior stand. However, the Dino scope plus stand is 3 times more expensive ($200) than the VEHO. Google "AM2011 Dino-Lite Basic" to find more info.

Also, I've read reports of Mac users have problems with the VEHO software. I don't know if these problems persisted for the latest version of OS X.
