I am interested in purchasing a basic kitchen set as a gift for my sister and brother in law for Christmas. I would like to include a chef's knife and paring knife as a minimum in the set.

1. Are you right handed? Right
2. What type of knife are you interested in (gyuto, nakiri etc..) chef set
3. What size knife are you looking for? 8" chef
4. Do you prefer carbon or stainless steel? Forged steel
5. Do you prefer a western handle or a Japanese handle?
6. How much did you want to spend? $175
7. Do you know how to sharpen? Hmmm, I'm certain my brother in law will say he is!

Thank you for your recommendations!

This is an excellent gift set that is in your price range and I think they will really enjoy it.

I have looked at that set as well for myself. I ended up purchasing something else but I know I certainly would not mind finding those knives under my tree come Christmas time! ;)

It is definitely NOT a knife set I would think "Really??? WHY?!?!?" lol

And yes, I have received questionable knife sets like that, and from my Dad no less. A particular $20 Hinkels set comes to mind... *shudder* I still love him though. :P

Maybe I should send him a link to that set and hope he gets the idea... ;)

The Tojiro VG10 knife set for the price is just as good as the more expensive Shun stuff. You just don't get pretty handles and wavy looking blades. Big woop...

You also don't get the big price tag. lol

Shuns seem nice for what they are, but they cost too much for a production line knife and what they have to offer. Especially when I can get a handmade for about the same price. ;)

I'd go for the Tojiro DP before Shun as well. Much better priced production knives. :)
