My grandfather cut some beautiful pieces of a Geode and I want to try out my lapidary skills. My goal is to make a geode handle but need a heavy chef knife to do it so the handle does not completely kill the balance of the knife....I am going to try to keep the balance neutral.

what is the best performing "heavy" knife? Hiromoto? or is there something more robust?

How heavy? Hiromoto would be a good starting point, but are we talking western deba heft?

BTW, if you don't show off the process/progress, I'll be really disappointed. :)

I had not thought about a deba, mostly because I don't use one. A cleaver is another option, but want to check out chef knives first.

I need to do much better at pics, I will try to document this one.

The western deba is basically a chef knife but thick and heavy. Take a look here: http://www.chefknivestogo.com/todpwede24.html
