Stupid question here.
I just purchased an Illinois strop for straight razors, very nice leather and it has a white linen type of second strop.
What is the purpose of that, do I use that first, is it like a coarse stone to be used on dull razors ?

Hi Peter,

Use the linen first and then finish with the leather.

Thanks Mark. I received a nice pm from Melampus who said the same. I'm good to go, thanks again.

The linen or canvas side is to deburr the razor once it comes off the hone.

I have wondered about this myself. Thanks for asking.

I wasn't ignoring the community by answering via PM. I have been simply furious with some ill conceived assumptions floating around & had to step away awhile to temper my anger.

I tend to think of the canvas/leather as a split-hide & smooth leather bench strop; sort of a two-step stropping progression.
