You noticed how Mark hasn't chimed in here, because it is what it is.

You're right, and I appreciate the weight difference. It's just, well, my cart on the site right now contains one 2 oz bottle of .5 micron spray, two 8 inch balsa strops, and one 8 inch horse butt strop. Total weight can't even be a pound, size would be the same as your package to me, Scott, and the order price is $44.90. Shipping price is $30.60. Madison isn't THAT much farther from me than where you are.
The reality is CKTG is Mark's shop, and his business, and it's a business I like and respect. Every time I go to pick a vendor I'm rooting for CKTG, because I appreciate his focus on education and I like buying from a guy who's obviously, honestly into what he's selling. I'm only offering my perspective as a Canadian customer who buys sharpening supplies semi-regularly. I don't see any reason I'll stop shopping at CKTG, but, like I said up at the top of the page, I would buy more items more often if shipping wasn't quite so costly.

Actually Madison is a lot closer to you than Seattle. I know it's frustrating. It looks like distance has nothing to do with cross border postage. From what I could tell it will cost the same amount to ship the same thing from Miami to Edmonton, as it would from Detroit to Windsor. :(

From the USPS website:

First-Class Mail Package International Service can be used for lightweight packages or bulky large envelopes. The surface area of the address side of the item to be mailed must be large enough to contain completely the applicable customs form, postage, and any applicable markings, endorsements, and extra service labels.

Tracking is available to certain countries when used in conjunction with Electronic Delivery Confirmation.
Insurance and indemnity are not available.
Registered Mail is available as an added service to most destinations for an additional fee.
4 pound maximum.
Requires customs declaration form PS Form 2976 if the item contains dutiable contents.
Maximum value is $400.

I would expect the deal breaker is the lack of insurance. I've used First-Class Mail Package International to send items to a friend in Canada, but have accepted the fact that if the package is lost, that there is no recourse. I don't think it's reasonable to expect any commercial entity to accept that kind of risk.

I could point out several online vendors, from giants like Amazon to small guys running ebay stores who feel it's "reasonable" to offer graded shipping options. However, I'm done with the topic. My comment was meant as an observation made to Mark about my customer experience. I didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition.

I think some users like myself would buy more smaller items. I only need a few tings such as knife guards. Considering buying some locally. Would prefer to buy them from CKTG. Shipping literally doubles my order amount. Just saying...But on the other hand. It probably is not worth it to consider other options. New to the forum. Thanks for reading.

I'm just here to say that i also would appreciate a cheaper international shipping option. I will probably stimm buy a knife on cktg, but i will buy my stone(s) at a local (german) shop, because even if i ordered both together, it would still increase the shiping costs.

The reason it's so expensive and Mark has not commented is because Mark cares about his U.S. business. International is just an added bonus. If he cared at all, there would be more and cheaper options, or free shipping on purchases over X amount, etc. Mark has a great selection and good business... if you are American. Go 'murica. Think I'm being harsh or talking out of my butt? I e-mailed about this before, and got a 2 word no care or effort response from Mark.

ok, thought about it for a minute... wasnt gonna, but i have to say something.....
Arlius > first off, this is a one year old thread, and this is your first post. seriously????
im going to try to keep this short, but come on! for you to sit there and post shit about the person who makes this forum possible give us a break.
Mark Richmond is a genuine guy, and his company CKTG is a fantastic resource for all of us, from the knife nuts to the first time home use buyers.... i am canadian and have been dealing with this company for at least 4 years, does shipping to canada suck? yes, but i dont have to buy from him, nor do you... all i can say is that i recently had the oportunity to meet mark in person and for you to say that he only cares about his "murican" as you so put it clientelle base is so far from the truth your kidding yourself...

im going to stop here before i say things i could regret, but will finish by saying that no one is forcing you to buy from his company, and if you dont like the way he ships his products dont. there are lots of other companys in the world you can buy from, but for me, i buy here because i do believe he cares for his clientel and is passionate about what he sells...
my 2cents..

Oh sorry, my mistake. Didn't know there was a requisite number of posts required before you can say anything negative. Also I went back through dozens of threads and resurrected this... oh no wait, it was less than half a page down. Did I read date? No, but why does it matter? Prefer I started a new thread saying the same thing?

Obviously you stopped reading or you would have seen the part about his 2 word (and my mistake, technically was 4 words. USPS Priority International Mail) reply to my e-mail (or you just disregarded it entirely... seriously???). If you think that's "caring and passionate" wow, you have low standards.

I've not posted before, but I've read and followed CKTG for a couple years. Does the shipping suck? Yup. But his response is what pissed me off enough to post. Great that he's nice in person (most people are), but behind a computer, obviously a different story.

Being nice to someone buying your merch doesn't make you a good person, it makes you a businessman. Shrugging off someone like he did and not catering in any way to clientele outside of the U.S. writes a clear story to me. Do I have to buy from him? Nope. Nor will I. Does that mean I can't state my opinion? Nope. Because this is his forum doesn't mean I'm obligated to blow sunshine up anyone's butt.

Shipping isn't rocket science or a major undertaking. No change in years means he's satisfied with how it is. That's just wrong, no matter what way you look at it. If you don't think so, fine, your opinion.

If I was Mark, I'd care about lost business, but guess that's not the case. Hence why I also stated, his core business is the U.S., international is just a bonus.
