Hi, Mark.
I need a strategy to sharpen an Allen Elishewitz “Hyde” that I acquired. It has a fat belly with a recurve ahead and behind. It’s cool to look at, but I’m a bit stumped as to sharpening. I think I can get it most of the way by drawing over the edge of my stones (I have dmt and chosera stones, plus an edge pro gathering dust.) I thought for stropping I’d tack a medium like leather to dowelling and apply diamond, boron etc. for finishing. Can I trouble you for your thoughts about the stropping- I’d need something without the magnetic backing?? David.

For the strop, I can easily sell you the leather or horse butt without the backing. Can you send us a picture of your knife (choil shot) so we can see the grind? I'm a little unsure about what you are dealing with.

Here are a few examples I found of the Allen Elishewitz “Hyde” w/recurved back halves, at least.

Instances in which I have to ->sharpen recurves<-, I use the stone's corners, but different then maybe you're thinking. If you look down at the sharpening face of the stone, yes... I used the tops of the four corners. I also hold the knife at an angle to the sides of the stone face, and use those "corners," as well. These corners meaning the 90 degree corner of top face to side face.

I think your leather wrapped dowel idea could be effective for stropping...

I have an idea.

This will work for the strop. You can stick it right on a rod as a sheath and it will double as your loaded strop too:

Also, if you have an edge pro it will work well for this type of edge. You can purchase a couple skinny stones and work that edge with those. Just make sure the edges are rounded on the stones so you don't bump into your edge with them.

Thanks, guys. It's nice to get home from work and discover my problem was solving itself while I was away!! I'm going to put three or four honing rod sheaths in the basket for finishing, and try to get by with the edges of my choseras for set up. If not, there are a lot more skinny Edge Pro stones than there were a couple of years ago when I tooled up. Since I only have the one recurve, I'll try to get by on the cheap, first, but if I zig-zag through the brands, I can set up a pretty good sequence on the EP if that's the way I have to go. Cheers, and thanks again.

I finally got some free time to play with the leather steel covers. I got four sheaths and mounted two each on wooden dowels. I sprayed them with HA diamond in 1 , .5 , & .25 and CBN .1 micron. My Elishewitcz is still popping sharp out of the box, but I tried them out on a Wusthof bird's beak peeler. It worked a charm. I store them in leftover gift wrap cores. I think next time I order from CKTG I'll get a couple more sheaths for chromium oxide etc. As my friend Pat says, anything worth doing is worth doing to ridiculous extremes! Thanks for the help, guys.
