I tripped across an incredible deal on a NIB Masamoto KS. I didn't need another knife but couldn't pass up such a great deal. I bought it thinking I would just flip it to help finance my next stone or knife fix. Well....I made the mistake of using the knife last night to prep supper "just to see" . I loved the feel of this knife right out of the box! Had a great edge, loved profile and geometry, and the f&f was better than what I was expecting from past reading. Really liked the little extra length(255mm) on the edge compared to the Kono 240mm(235mm on the edge) I have.

After supper I told the boss, I mean wife, that I decided to keep it. She busted out laughing.ImageShe said,"I knew when you bought it you where going to keep it!" She knows me so well.Image

I guess it did help finance the knife fix, with one purchase instead of buying and selling! :) Now it needs new shoes ;)

Yea Tim, It did inadvertently turn into the next fix. I saved enough on the original sale that I am contemplating new shoes! The F&F on this handle is not bad at all but it is still pretty cheap.

JEFF <> When you reference F&F, contextually, it sounds like you're commenting only on the handle. I'm asking because I'd like to know what else, if anything, you recognized as lacking in the whole.

Mel -->The F&F was quite good on the entire knife. I didn't find problems with sharp edges on the spine or heel. It had a nice even grind on the primary bevel and was very sharp. The polish on the blade face was clean and even.
The handle met the machi flush with no gaps around the tang. Where the ferrule met the wood was flush overall. The buffalo horn was polished out nicely. My biggest complaint would be the cheesy magnolia wood used in the handle with no oil or finish of any kind. But that is to be expected with the majority of wa handles in my brief experience with j-knives, so no major problem. I plan to put a couple coats of Tru-oil on it and call it good for now. May have it re-handled eventually.

Overall the knife looked, felt and handled above my expectations. Probably because I had put to much weight in the few complaints I had read concerning this knife. I liked it being 255mm on the edge also, the extra length felt good. I didn't figure I could replace this knife with something better for what I paid for it so decided to hang onto it for now. I was considering buying something more of a work horse compared to and to complement my Kono HD and this fits for now.

The profile on my KS's was uneven enough, I had to reprofile the heel 1.5".
