I believe R2 and SG2 are identical steels.....sold by two different places.

Hi Paul,

The Tanaka does not exist yet. When they're done I'll get the picture up.

R-2 Powdered High Speed Tool Steel Material is made by Kobelco steel company.

SG-2 is marketed and sold by Takefu steel company. I heard that Kobelco Steel supplies R-2 Steel to them and Takefu re-brands the steel SG-2 or Super Gold #2 to the knife makers in Takefu mostly but also to others like Shigeki.

All this is second hand. When I travel to Takefu Village next year I'll ask the blacksmiths or the steel mill if I get a chance to visit them.

Also, when I first started buying these knives from Shigeki's father (before he passed away) he used to change the names on the steel description and I would change them back and forth. It was comical but the reason was he was using the names interchangeably.
