Also my prototype is still sharp after 7 months. It doesn't shave now but it's still cutting nicely.

I have a couple little rust stains on the edge from letting it drip dry but again nothing like carbon steel.

Hi Mark....I've looked on the site for these and searched for HAP40 with no results. Are these listed on the site yet? What type of knife will this be (assuming Gyuto). Any comments about price range, hands, etc?

Thanks!

Todd

P.S. Promise to get some reviews up here soon - LOVE the Takeda you sent - absolutely stunner!

Here is the chemical composition of voodoo steel.

HAP40

C 1.3
S .30
Mn .40
N 0
Cr 4.2
W 6.0
Mo 5.0
V 3.10
Co 8.0

A couple observations.

No Nickle and very light on the Chromium means semi stainless performance on the edge. My experience is it's a little more reactive than HD steel and way less reactive than say aogami super.

Similar carbon content to Aogami super.

High Colbalt gives this steel nearly unmatched wear resistance. My knife still has a pretty good edge and it's been 8 months of home use. Won't shave anymore but it cuts well. Also very high Tungston content which combines with carbon and chromium under high temps to add strength to the steel.

This stuff is hardened at much higher temps than Aogami super or even ZDP189. My steel mill is hardening these at 1190-1210 Celsius and tempering them at a whopping 560-580 degrees Celcius. They got very uniform heat treat out of the steel and I viewed the sample sheets for HRC and they all tested out between 65.4 and 67.3.

Things are going to start moving with these. I'll start laying in pricing and giving updates when they ship and will be passing these around some of the most active mods that are in the USA. I might have to send a couple overseas too if Rookie and Mike want a peek at them.

PS don't think I know what I'm talking about. I'm being schooled by Dr. O at the steel mill. He's giving me an education on steel making, general metallurgy etc. Then I call Devin up and ask him dumb questions about what the guys are telling me and he tells me in knife maker baby talk. I think I've just moved up from knife maker pre-school to kindergarten.

LOL, I started to read up about steel and steel making and even the basics would sometimes make my head hurt! LOL.
