I was able to finally score some store branded plastic blade guards for the store.

We should be getting them in about a month. I had to buy a ton of them to get it done so I hope it works out. I'm pretty sure it will since I've been selling thousands of them a year for over a decade.

The big hurdle is you have to make a die for the part. It costs a couple thousand bucks but once it's purchased it's mine to use over and over.

I might drive up there to watch them make them. If I go I'll video the process. I'm sure it looks like a big pasta machine cranking out plastic instead of pasta.

You can ship one on every knife you sell! ;)

Think of it as advertising like the license plate holder a car dealer has on the cars he sells . . .

They will likely be extruding plastic and if you do a google search, you will find images of the equipment used. The tooling is likely the actual die (think of the noodle shape in your pasta maker description) and maybe some cutting blades. Most of my experience is with injection molding, not extruding.

The tooling will be custom made to fit whatever machine they plan to use and while aluminum is easier and cheaper to machine it will wear quickly, so make sure to get production capable hardened steel dies and they will last for a long time. Also, you will be pretty much locked into using the same supplier since the tooling fits their machine.

After the tooling is paid for, the unit cost should be incredibly low . . . fun project!

Looking forward to these. What types/sizes are you getting? Will it be a one size fits all or?

Good question Diesel.

So the die can be made for 1 size but the lengths can be cut in as many sizes I want. Since the big ones are the vast majority of our sales I figured we would start with those and add the small ones if the big ones are good sellers. So, here are the sizes we're starting with:

2.135" Wide 6.5" Long
2.135" x 8.5"
2.135" x 10.5"
2.135" x 12.5"

The printing on the holder will just say Chef Knives To Go. They can do this basically for free. I considered doing a screen print on them which would look a lot better but these are commodity type items and if I can do them cheap people will buy tons of them and I don't think most people care in the least how pretty the printing is on them.

I bought twice as many of the 8.5" and 10.5" since those always sell better.

Cool. I'll keep an eye out. Have (2) knife rolls that I've put together that could use blade guards on all the knives. Not that the knives are worth much, but I have one setup for camping/taking with my BBQ trailer, and the other is for storing knives in the house.

MARK <> Are you talking guards like KnifeSafes or sheaths?

Can. Not. Wait.

Mark, will there be any lining inside like the Dexter ones, or just plastic?

Just plastic.

They are u shaped so these slide on. I should be getting the prototypes next week. Once I sign off on them they'll produce them pretty quickly.
