I thought we could do a little how to for customers that want to try their hand at sharpening a Japanese straight razor.

I'll post some stuff a customer of mine gave me as a primer once I edit and condense. Please add your own methods if you know how to sharpen these. I'm ignorant about it but I get the general idea.

How's this?

Critical to start with a dead flat stone.

Place razor on the stone with the back side or Omote facing down.

Use firm pressure about 5mm behind the cutting edge.

Maintain fixed angle and use the whole stone.

Use pressure on the push stroke only.

Try about 10 push strokes.

Flip it over and give it one light pass.

Repeat up the progression of stones you are using.

Strop with your favorite stropping substrate.

I like to do 7/1 ratio or 10/3 when I hone them. 8k is NOT enough.

I'm really liking the enthusiasm around the Kamisori - I look forward to adding one asap. I have all the tools I need to sharpen just about anything, why in the world would I continue to by safety razors! Plus I think I'd feel like a samurai for every shave.

I keep a separate Kangaroo strop - 1x6 - in the bathroom with some 0.025 micron poly (emulsion formulation) on it and freshen the edge on it before shaving with a few strokes on it. At that fine a grit I don't think the stroke ratio matters much at all and just do the same number of strokes on each side. I do this while the water is heating up to make some lather. Very easy clean shave. White layered steel with rattan wrapping and sting ray leather handle.
