Well, my aunt's birthday is coming up and my uncle wanted something special. She lost her 6" chefs knife years ago and never replaced it. They also do a lot of veggies, so after talking to my uncle, we decided on a Tanaka Blue #2 nakiri and a 6" chefs knife from one of Jantz kits with the VG-10 core damascus blade. I had gotten some stabilized blue Box Elder, Maple and Buckeye Burl in and she really liked the Box Elder Blue Burls, so I went with that. I used a Mosaic pin with copper on both and did a simple handle using only the burl, no spacers, no ferrules, etc.

Yeah, the petty feels really nice in the hand! The Wa style handle is still a bit blocky, gotta work on trimming it down and rounding it out a bit more into more of an oval shape. It's more like a rounded rectangle now. It's a slower working one because the eyes like to pop out if you go too aggressively with the sanding belts or files.

I tried to kinda go with the damascus pattern in front of the handle, but it was a bit sharp, so I brought it back a tad. Still gotta do some clean up and smoothing, I need to taper the front of the petty a tad more. On the Nakiri, I've been fondling it tonight and I am going to make some more adjustments to it. Take down the top of the handle a tad and round it out a bit more. I will get some pics when these are fully finished, but these pics show the wood nicely!

For the Nakiri handle, I did it a bit differently. I took a block of wood and sliced it, but now down the middle. I Dremeled out the thicker side to fit the tang in so when the 2 pieces were put together, the tang hole was in the middle and the seam was slightly offset. It worked, but I've been playing with a few different ways to do the Wa style handles. My favorite so far is still the aluminum tubing method!
