is it still any good? it doesn't have any identifying marks. Bought off a lady that was selling for an expat getting rid of some stuff. Got it pretty darn cheap too. compared to ebay prices, at least. Any tips for me? I have a couple of el cheapo crappy gold dollar straight razors to play around with.

they're pretty flat, looks like they were used and maintained decently then got stored for a good long while. didn't come with a box though. would have liked to know what brand it was.

thanks.

not sure what stone that is. hard to say. can be anything. looks like its been used with oil thou. might be a turkish oil stone. if thats the case its a pretty low grit. good for bevel setting etc. lapp the stone and have a go see what edge you get.

lapped it, tried sharpening with it with both straight razors and one of my carbon steel knives.

it gave a pretty good edge on the straight razor. really is good for straight razors. way too fine for use on anything other than straight razors i think. tried shaving with the straight razor i used to sharpen with, best edge i ever got from it yet. lol. not that i've ever gotten it any better than this. it is just a crappy razor.

feels like a natural stone of some sort, slow on kitchen knives. gives a polished edge, could barely feel any teeth on it at all.

looks like i got a winner for $6 lol.

after lapping and sharpening with it, i used only water. sharpened with it like any natural stone i would use to sharpen with. the color of the stone started to really show after sharpening with it. it got lighter and lighter every time.

possibly an extra fine arkansas stone underneath? i dunno.
