Hi guys, I am in need of some whetstones. I like the feel of whetstones more than ceramic sharpening steels. I am currently using a King 250/1000 grit stone for all of my Shuns. I need more stones, maybe a 2k, 4k, and 8k.

What do you guys recommend for a beginning sharpening kit? I don't want to spend a fortune on stones; I want more bang for the buck when it comes down to it.

You can add the 2k Green Brick http://www.chefknivestogo.com/naao2kgrbr.html
and the Suehiro Rika 5k http://www.chefknivestogo.com/suri50grst.html and you'll have a good set.
If you add the Latte 400 http://www.chefknivestogo.com/la400grst.html you can ditch the king altogether
and use it for things you don't want to use the good stones for.

What about the Naniwa 3k and 5k? They're pretty cheap.

which naniwa? the chosera or the super stone?

i would prefer chosera's as they are harder and more stone to work with. superstones are thin and soft.

A 2k green brick would be a great addition though from there I would jump to a 10k imanishi. It's a excellent combo.

P.S. whetstone has a basis translation of "to sharpen with stone"

naniwa's superstones are even softer than the kings. dunno if they're better as i have no experience with them. i still like harder stones so they work better with harder steels

For cheap stones. You can find King 800 1000 and 1200 for $30 and a King ice bear 6000 for $20
