I currently own the Tojiro ITK 120mm petty. It cuts fine but I don't love it the way I love my Tanaka gyuto. In fact, I find myself cutting mushrooms/cherry tomatoes with the gyuto because its more fun! So of course I want to replace it. While not quite ready to pull the trigger yet, I think I'm down to 2 choices...the Masakage Shimo 150mm http://www.chefknivestogo.com/mashpe15.html and the Takeda Banno Petit http://www.chefknivestogo.com/tabape.html. I really like the look of both and this is strictly for home use but I want another knife that I love using. I've heard nothing but good thngs about Takeda and Aogami Super Steel but I've heard very little about Masakage. Just looking for some more opinions about either one.

Thanks in advance!!

Chris

I've got a Takeda gyuto and the 150 shimpu petty, and I absolutely love the Masakage. Don't get me wrong, the Takeda is everything I could ask for, but the Masakage is every bit a joy to use. You honestly couldn't go wrong with either choice.

I've never seen the petty's from Masakage, but their gyuto's are really nice. Based on that, the petty's should be really nice as well.

The question I would have is why you don't love the Tojiro?!?! It might help answer the question.

Adam, I honestly don't know. Like I said it cuts fine, it looks ok, but i just don't look forward to using it the way I do with the Tanaka. I'm actually thinking of making a sheath or maybe just a magnet and leaving it my locker at work to cut fruit for dinner (I eat a ton of kiwi, apples, oranges, avacodos, etc) There is nothing wrong with it at all! It just doesn't bring me the joy the Tanaka does. Maybe I could thin it a little and that would bring back the fun? It might be the KU finish...it seems more cheap than rustic. No regrets about the purchase though! For the price, I've learned that I really need a petty and that I'm not a huge fan of the 'baked on' KU finish. Plus after watching the shaving video, I'm considering making a Tojiro vs Moustache video of my own! Now I just need to make sure i don't cut off my lips....

Additionally, I think the Masakage Shimo has a beautiful finish and based on the patina my Tanaka has formed, i think the Shimo would look awesome after a few uses!

But, Takedas get rave reviews from everyone and the KU finish doesn't look as thick and crusty as the ITK...

Back to square one :)

Hey, I understand that all too well. I love the personal attachments I make with knives. If it doesn't feel right, it never gets used. :)

I think it may also have something to do with buying the Tanaka first...the ITK is a big step down. I agree though, without the 'attachment' it just doesn't get used as much. Luckily I'm only a 3 knife guy and love 2 of my 3 knives. Just looking for personal experiences and/or opinions to help replace the third (and justify the $$, LOL).

Vectron, thanks for the info! I appreciate the input!! I'm sure you're right as i've never heard anything bad about either one.
