Adam, Is the Suehiro Rika any softer than the Kitayama I already have? That is a pretty soft stone and now that I don't gouge it, I like it!

Yeah, it's softer than I remember the Kitayama being. Not chalk soft like the Naniwa 10k SuperStone...but soft.

Ok, going to go with the Suehiro Rika . . . however I am now wondering if I need another tweener to fill between the 1K Shapton and the 5K Suehiro Rika. Anyone?

a 2k stone would be a good finisher for softer steels on western / european style knives

No, absolutely not. I go from 1k to the Rika all the time, I never use a stone between them.

But, like franzb69, I do like a 2k for a finisher on some knives. It's useful there...but not between 1k and Rika.

Ok, so I like this direction. I think I will get the 2K stone to use as finisher on my softer knives.

Shapton Pro 2K??? or what do you recommend?

I went with the Green Brick of Joy for all the softer steel western / european style knives... A one stop sharpening brick.

I've got a Shapton Pro 2k that I use on my softer steel, good stone. I have been curious about the Green Brick too.

Pulled the trigger . . . I really appreciate the advice!

Went with the Suehiro Rika and decided on the Naniwa Aotoshi 2k Green Brick of Joy, I mean with a name like that you gotta try it!
