I'm about to make a DVD on sharpening for newbies. The main goal is to teach people a quick and easy method to sharpen for people that have limited or no knowledge about sharpening but want to give it a try. I want the DVD to be short on theory and heavy on how to practical instruction. I hate watching people blather on for 45 minutes before they actually show you how to do something. I'm boring enough and I don't want to make this a lesson on how to cure insomnia. So, I envision a short, fact filled DVD that gets right to the business of sharpening a knife. A general outline would be something like this:
What you need to get started
How to flatten a stone
How to hold the knife
What angle to sharpen on
Magic marker method
Making a quick angle guide
Grinding an edge
Testing your edge for sharpness
I think I could cover all this stuff in 35 minutes and sharpen a knife as I go along.
If it goes well I would like to do follow up ones to this that would get into other issues. I thought this would make a really good addition to some of the sharpening sets we sell (basically include it for free) and I could sell it as a stand alone product for $10 or less. The idea would be to sell a lot of them and not worry about making money on the product.
Shaun has agreed to help me with the technical aspects of making the dvd and I'll be sure to blame him for anything and everything that is wrong with the final product, including my performance.
I would love some comments and opinions.
