Good morning Mark,

My wife purchased the 500, 1k and 6k Shapton GS for my birthday and I'm looking to fill in the gaps. I would say 70% of my knives are of the high wear resistant type (S110V, K390, M4, Vanadis 4E etc). I'm already looking at the Bamboo series as I've heard great things about the 1K. I'm a big fan of the Edge Pro but doing a few knives freehand has got me hooked!

Oh, to set the bevels I have the DMT XXC,XC, and C stones. I will upgrade to the Atomas in due time.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Dan

Hi Dan,

I have more fun sharpening free hand too.

If I were to add 1 stone to your existing set it would be a Shapton Glass 2K.

Dan, I would agree with Mark on this one. The 2k is an often overlooked stone in many series. Especially with abrasion resistant steels, smaller jumps are preferred.

For extremely abrasion resistant steels (like s110v), consider using the glassstones in concert with CBN. So consider spraying some 15 micron CBN on your 1k Glassstone and 4 micron CBN on your 6k stone to increase aggressiveness and assist on getting through those vanadium carbides more efficiently. Just a single spray and you can HEAR the difference. Note that 4 micron cbn is closer to 4k than 6k, so it will considerably increase aggression on a 6k. For less aggression use a 2 micron CBN on this stone. ONLY use the slurry or water soluble suspension, not the paste. Non - water soluble preparations do NOT belong on stones and will damage them.
