Have the Apex 4 Edge Pro Set (120/220/400/600/1000) stones.

Am upgrading/adding the Shapton Glass (320/1K/2K/4K/8K) EP stones.

Also have regular full size (non EP) Chosera 600 / 1K / 5K stones.

Is there 1 plate (ATOMA or DMT) that is suitable for flattening them all? Or will I require 2 separate plates?

Been looking at the ATOMA 140x or 400x or some of the DMT plates.

I'd just make sure to buy a full size plate....i.e. roughly 8" x 3"

I'd get the 140 Atoma or the DMT XXC....with my preference towards the Atoma but based purely on others reviews I trust. I have the DMT and debate often whether to spend money on a new Atoma.

You don't need two flattening plates. The DMT XXC or the Atoma 140 will be capable of doing the chore you need for ANY of the stones you may ever have.

I keep hearing that the Atoma 140 will scratch and groove any stones over 1K and that most use an Atoma 400 or DMT C for finer grits...

Perhaps when the plate is very new that is more true. But, once the plate (at least in the case of the DMT XXC) is broken in I can and do use it upto my 10,000 grit Naniwa SS.

I never use anything but a XXC on all my stones. There is no reason to use finer grit plates that I can figure. As Adam said the plate needs to be broken in (just flatten a couple lower grit stones and your good) but after that it works great and any scratches that are imparted on the stones are not transferred to the finish of the knife.

Get the 140 Atoma, and put abrasive film (the type with adhesive backing) to the back of the plate to refine the 140 scratch pattern. I have a 140 with a 600 grit film on the back. Works great!
