So, I currently have a King 1K/6K stone. I only use the 6K side. I'm going to give the King stone to my mom in a few days.

I'm looking for suggestions on a reasonably priced replacement to fit into my current stone progression.

Currently im using the following stones

150 diamond plate
500 shapton glass
Amakusa Natural (~1K)
King 6K

Any suggestions on what I should replace the king with?

Price is a concern. I'm not going to spend $300 on some super rare dinosaur fossil sedimentary stone or something. Just looking for a decent stone that cuts and also, maybe, leaves a polish that is a little above its claimed grit.

thanks!

I LOVE mt Kity, but I don't know I'd jump from one of my 1200's to my Kity.

I dont think you can go wrong with Rika 5. I have a King 1200, 3000 & 6000 (not 1k/6k), and there is no comparison. Feedback number one; the feel is night & day. Polish number two, the Rika's mud is just... fun, and she leaves you shining nicely. She makes you wanna get dirty. Number three is grind; she leaves a better bite... period. Edge quality is simply higher on the Rika. IMHO, of course...

If your using a natural then stick with a stone that will compliment it, the kitayama would not be my first choice for this.

My recommendation goes to the Arashiyama 6k

I would say Rika 5K and then maybe a Shobu San J Nat or a Ozuka Asagi Koppa. Those are the last 3 stones I use in my progression, but depending on what I want to cut, I may stop at the Rika or Shobu.

I would go with the bamboo nubatama its a semi hard stone and if you purchase the 3x3 atoma 1200 slurry stone you will have one of the best 6 k stone on the market and I own several 6k's and reach for the nubatama every time, its slow wearing and I doubt I will wear it out in my lifespan but I have already been through two kings in 2 yrs so that should speak for itself. Peace and prosperity, jmbullman
