Hey guys,

I am new to the forum and wanted to get some advice on my first set of stones. I have never sharpened before but am interested in getting started. I just bought my first gyuto, Takayuki Grand Chef Wa-Gyuto 240mm, so I figured now is as good a time as any to learn to sharpen free hand.

I really don't know the first thing about sharpening so I plan to use the tutorials on the cktg website as a starting point. However, I am completly lost as to which stones to start with. Any reccomendations? Should I buy individual stones or is it better to buy in sets? Basically, any help or insight will be greatly appreciated.

I do not really have a set budget, but would just like to start off with some reasonably priced, but quality, stones.

Finally, I will probably begin practicing with some old knives and my CCK 1303 before trying out my new knife...I'm not sure it that will change any of the reccomendations.

Thanks for the help!

I have everything in that 5 piece set and it works really well on AEB-L in the Grand Chef, or pretty much any other steel I have used so far. I have been using J nats as finishing stones that leave a nice, bitey edge after the Rika 5K, so maybe look at the smaller (Koppa) J natural stones or get a strop for the quick touch ups/finishing if you want more refinement than the Rika 5K.

Ok cool, I will look into that.

I'll have to post a few more questions once I receive all this stuff and am completely overwhelmed :D
