I'm conflicted...and my house is divided.

I'm making an integral bolster gyuto. Nothing grand and wonderful for most makers with a forge...but for me it's something new and I've babied it along for a long time. It won't be every day I get to make something like this since I don't have the hammer and forge.

Finally getting to the point where it's time to finish it up. That involves a handle and I'm conflicted over a very silly issue.....white or black spacer.

I made this white spacer and really liked it. Then I asked for my wife's thoughts and she said black.

The wood is light colored black ash burl. I can mock up a black spacer too and probably will tonight....but let's vote it out. :)

Combo, black and white spacer :) Or maybe a thin red spacer?? Red tends to look nice with some of the lighter woods.

LOL, why not? Actually, I prefer no spacers with the bolsters :) Maybe a thinner white or thinner black spacer?

White. Save black for something down the road.

As a married man, I will say always go with the wife, right or wrong...it will always bite you in the butt if you don't!

ADAM <> I think the stark contrast of black will really accentuate the natural beauty of the burl. A spacer is small enough that the contrast is not so stark to overpower the whole but prominent enough to complement the ash.

The white will look fantastic, as well, but it will produce a more subtle & muted product. Not a bad thing, by any means... just a preference. Do you want something to be beautifully quiet, or would you prefer a louder statement?

Very excited to see your masterpiece in finality...

p.s.
for me, red's too much. these gorgeous artistic handle renditions everyone does are already jaw dropping. so much so, they become these trophy pieces to only pull out for VIPS. colors - for this old-fashioned guy - are a no-no for tools.

Well, is it done yet? :D

I think the thinner black would be nice, especially with the other wood you have in the picture with the black spalt lines and flecks in it :)
