5 shaves before I go to the hones usually. As you said, it depends on the razor.

Honing from scratch takes 30 minutes to 1 hour or even more. I have a Jernbolaget wedge that is very hard and took almost 3 hours of honing to restore to a pristine edge.

Well maintained or new razor can be honed in 30 min.

Five shaves and you go to the hones? Are your whiskers made from adamantine?

Have you tried a balsa strop loaded with CrO to extend the life of the edge?

I meant before stropping on a hanging strop doesn't suffice anymore. So a balsa strop or a stone steps in.
