Niece is introduced to sharpening

Wed Jan 22, 2014 2:07 pm

So my niece was visiting, she is very hands on type of girl, quite a lovely person and she was fascinated by the process of sharpening free hand. So I gave her some lessons and she went home to where she lives in the US (her husband is American) and told me she was going to go get herself a waterstone.

She goes into the cool knife shop which is nearby and meets a very nice gentleman and she proceeds to tell him about her uncle and how he recommended some water stones and how she understood terms like the Burr and what a sharpie was for, all that cool stuff. The fella was very nice and patient and extremely helpful and in her words, quite knowledgeable.

It was Bob Kramer that she was talking to and he sold her the stone.......now does that seem fair to you, I've been learning to sharpen knives for over 30 years she gets tips from Bob?

(Then again, she doesn't know Rook or Mel or Ken or Jason (I could list 10 names here) so I am still one up on her :) )

Peter - that's a great story! Like they say, "It's not what you know, it's who you know" ;-).

Sounds like you've introduced another person to the world of sharpening in a great way. Well done!

If I had a transporter beam, I would pop right up there and see about taking some lessons from you. You have a wonderful philosophy about sharpening.

What would have been cooler is if she had known who she was talking to!
Great story Peter, and your right, you still know more of the best than she does!
So did she say if he was as good as you?Image

Oh my niece knew who Bob Kramer was, I told her all about him and his knives as I was teaching her to sharpen, I knew she lived "somewhere" within driving range of his shop, I just didn't know how close or if she would actually follow up with the whole thing and then to go in the store and have him serve her, that is pretty lucky.

She said he was quite patient, she didn't feel rushed or anything like that and he didn't push anything, she got a combo stone 400/1000 which is pretty much perfect for her needs.
I sure envy her the opportunity.

Jeff, she said he had more hair than I do.

Oh and don't worry, my niece has heard of all you guys :)

Thanks fellas.

Cool story Peter! Good deal on her making the trip to Kramer's shop. That must have been fun.

Great story. You'll have to stop in that shop the next time you visit your Niece.
