New shop toy and wood pics!

Sat Aug 03, 2013 11:44 pm

I've gotten into Wa handles more and more and wanted to speed things along. The Harbor Freight 12" disc sander is a beast, powerful like crazy, but the table isn't the best at holding 90 degrees; it tends to dip a lot. So I was at WoodCraft today and checked out their WoodRiver 12" sander. Table is MUCH more solid and actually held 90 degrees all afternoon! The motor isn't quite as powerful, but it has plenty of oomph and the disc runs a bit truer, too. After I shut it off, the disc continues to spin for like 2 minutes. I shut it off, turned on the HF and cut the 4 bevels on the handle, and looked over and saw the WoodRiver was STILL spinning!! It also runs a lot smoother and vibrates a lot less, too! So the WoodRiver is set as my 90 degree disc sander, and the HF is set to cut the angles on the octagon Wa style handles. Now I can do back and forth and not have to re adjust the table constantly!

And I decided to get some pics of most of the stabilized woods I have on hand as blocks.

So with a second sander making things a little easier are your handles going to be a little cheaper?!

Nope! Full Tilt Boogie on these 2! I only use coarse discs (36-80 grit, normally 60 grit) on these, and then move to the KMG and hand sanding from there. These get the blocks nice and square and the angles cut evenly, then it's just clean up.
