Your site was recommended to me by a friend. I am just getting into sharpening of knives and woodworking tools. I am interested in a starter kit to get my knives sharp and to sharpen my files and chisels. I noticed that most of your starter kits are out of stock why is this? Do you plan on having them in stock any time soon? Any recommendations for a good starter kit would be appreciated. I have looked at Shapton and like the idea. I am more interested in quality than cheap.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Shapton ran out of the 1K stone which knocked out all their sets.

They Bester sets we ran out of yesterday after being in stock for months. We will have more of both of these later this week we hope.

What more could you ask for in an excellent starter setup?

Mark has it tucked in the new arrivals section for now.

JEFF <> If coin is no issue, the Nubutama set is awesome, but for $75 less the http://www.chefknivestogo.com/knshcoset.html produces truly stunning results on a myriad of steels. I'm not suggesting one or the other; I'm just pontificating the lesser cost does not equal substantially lesser quality.

The Shapton name is usually equated with quality waterstones.....something that they've earned.

But, as others have said, there are other stone's out there that produce great results as well.

The two sets linked to by others will both perform very well.

Thank you for your prompt and informative replies. Not that it made the choice any easier - only better informed!

Hay Jeff

I fell down the sharpening rabbit hole and have a great stack of natural and synthetic stones now. Damn happy I do too.

What I learned is that sharpening stones are like food. What you like is what you like, and just because someone else says anchovies are the second coming rally might not be quite so great for you.

If you don't want to dive in too deep, go have a cheap meal so you have some reference points to start.

You might concider a cheap combo stone. I know this store sells a king 800/6k and another that starts with an I, something like imanchi. Try that out. See how it goes. Might you prefer harder stones? Softer? Ones that cut faster? You might like muddy stones or stones that smell like the rain Forrest. It's one way to find out. Other option is just plunge in and start consuming, my favorite way. :)

What I have figured out with my brief experience in sharpening is that your technique and skill are more important than the brand of stone you use. All the stones at CKTG are quality stones. All you can do is pick a few and get started. No matter what you buy your going to want more later, the nature of the beast! :D

I'd start out with something like the Latte 400, 2k green brick, and the 5k Suehiro Rika. That will give you a great start at a reasonable price. As you learn more about sharpening and stones you can build off of that.
