The Shapton Pro 1k and 1.5k are my favorites in that range. I had a bamboo 1k gold and hated it. Know nothing about the bamboo 1k large.
The Bester and Imanshi 1ks are good stones but somewhat entry level. I would go for something out of either Shapton line or try a Chocera.
A hidden jewel is the Arishyama 1k.

Jeff B...Can you explain what in particular makes the Bester and Imanishi "entry level." Do they dish fast? Are the soft and muddy? A little explanation as to why you personally prefer other 1k stones would be nice.

Hi Umberto, I think I would call the Best/Bester, Imanshi stones more starter stones mainly because they cut slower and dish faster than most of their counter parts. There was the day when these were the prime stones to have but there was little out there to chose from. I'm somewhat prejudiced against soakers now too after using a lot of splash-n-go-stones. I like the smoother feel of most newer brands. The Best/Bester, Imanshi stones and also the bamboo stones I've tried are just too gritty feeling to me.

And we know this is all just personal opinion and experience, I'm not saying I'm right about all of this or this is what's best for everyone. ;) Just trying to share some experience to help someone else get started as others did for me. :geek:

There is not a "bad" 1k stone on the site, so no real worries there.

This is actually a pretty legit strategy. My only advice is maybe try to get something on an extreme. For example, a hard stone will definitively tell you whether you prefer hard or soft. But a med stone may only tell you you don't like that stone. And vice-versa for a soft stone.
