With the permission of one of my customers, I would like to post some pictures of a razor he honed. The pictures taken were all at the same magnification (400x) and the individual pictures denote the number of strokes used - for example 100x for 100 strokes, NOT 100x magnification..
Chromium Oxide paste on Balsa 100 strokes
1 micron CBN on Balsa 100 strokes
0.5 micron CBN on Nanocloth over glass 100 strokes
0.1 micron CBN on Nanocloth over glass 100 strokes
0.050 Polycrystalline diamond over glass 150 strokes
While some of the initial scratches remain from the coarser grits, look at the absolutely incredible level of finish! You can actually make out reflections at 400 x magnifications!
The level of finish at these higher grit levels clearly shows the importance of using a substrate that doesn't impart its own scratch pattern on the finish. This makes Nanocloth one of the finest available substrates for use with compounds available as this data clearly shows. What is also interesting is how a compound as fine as 0.050 micorns can actually clean up coarse scratches as much as it does too.
