Morikata- removing lacquer

Tue Jan 08, 2013 12:28 am

Hey guys,

I just received my Morikata Santoku in AS today. Beautiful knife with no over grind or wavy bevel issue. My question is if I remove the lacquer finish will it create any issues besides more care or maintenance? I discovered while giving it a test run the lacquer finish creates a lot of drag on deeper cuts. Anyone else have this issue? Thank you for any insight available!

Are you speaking of the temporary clear lacquer often applied to new carbon knifes, or the black korouchi finish?

I'm thinking it would be the lacquer only as it feels "sticky" when cutting deep. I was tempted to try acetone but I figured I better ask first :)

Yes acetone will strip that stuff off.
