Greetings all.

I know I need a lapping plate (next pay check) and a lower grit stone

My current set up

Shapton Glass 1k
Green Brick
Shapton Glass 6k (finishing / stropping)

I'm looking for either 3,4,5k stone in the middle.

I used to freehand a long time ago, then went to edge pro for storage purposes now back to free hand and i've always made small steps in my progessions.

What should I toss into the middle?

I think the brick bridges that gap. If you are set on getting one in this range , seeing that you already have Shapton glass, if you like them, get the 4k Shapton. You could then occasionally skip the green brick if you so desired. 1k-4k is acceptable with the shaptons. Another thought would be the rika if you don't like the shaptons.

I know a 1 to 4k jump is acceptable
maybe I'm just too set in my ways

on the EP, lower stones as needed.
1k Shapton Glass
2k Green Brick
4k Shapton Glass
6k Shapton Glass

Was my progression and I loved the edges.

I don't understand, why do you need another stone between?

I don't like big jumps in grits, I never have I know people say the Greenbrick can go from 2 to 5k, but I would prefer another stone in the middle with a smaller grit jump from 2k to 6k.

Personal preference... way I've always sharpened whether freehand or edge pro.

Sometimes mixing grits can be a big part of the issue. Given your current stones I would say the 3k glass stone would fill the gap between the 1k and 6k excluding the green brick completely.
