Microchips

Fri Mar 28, 2014 12:15 pm

So my wife has a tojiro dp gyuto that she really likes. Shes had it a couple months now and it hasn't needed a full sharpening, I've been maintaining on a 5k. The other day I noticed a microchip on the edge. Can't see it with the naked eye but noticed it under a loupe. I'm curious if I should give this a full sharpening because of this microchip or if there is really no worry. The knife is still push cutting paper no problem and there is no issues with cutting. Thanks for your thoughts.

Excellent, that's what I was hoping. No need to sharpen if the knife is still performing well...... Well that's debatable :)

Kudos to your wife for using good technique or whatever she's doing to only have created a very small chip over the course of a couple of months. Any really small chips might be getting taken care of by the 5K maintenance as it stands.

+1 with Sadden, if it's not affecting the performance leave it alone. You could run though a light edge-leading sharpening on the 5K if more chips appear and you want to try removing them w/o taking off too much metal.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. It's not a chip it's a tooth let it chew :)

A micro-chip after several months. That's nothing to worry about lol! I'm lucky to leave work, after a shift, without a microchip or two.

Is there any need for me to back up everyone else and say you don't have a problem or is it obvious yet? :D
