I had once heard from a very reliable source that Masamoto, sometime ago, had a family squabble in which divided the family. This divide literally caused a corporate bifurcation leaving two production facilities... one reportedly creating a product superior to the other.
I am well aware the term "superior" is arbitrary, but I weigh consensus into my personal decision making processes.
Anyone have any input.?!

I heard this also. Not from a reliable source =). Tsukiji masamoto being the more original founding family and the more superior knife makers. I tried to go there last year when I was at the fish market but we could not find it, I don't know if it was just us but Japan's numerical address system is not intuitive like ours. Turns out we were less than 10 store fronts from it.=(

NELSGEE <> Awesome... thank you for your input, and I hope others will chime in!
Next question now is - do you know of any method to determine the difference in a particular Masamoto? For example, do they carry a different Kanji, or have an indicator on the box? You said you were 10 fronts away from Tsukiji Masamoto's brick & mortar... where was that specifically?

As far as the two brands/ families go I couldn't tell you. As far as the store go, the numbering system didn't make any sense to my wife nor I. Tsukiji is set up in a huge Square grid. Maybe two by two of our city blocks. Iirc masamoto is on one of the outer facing store fronts. So of if you were looking out of masamoto's store front you would be looking out into the street that is not considered tkukiji.

FYI......there is a butt load of knives shops in tsukiji market and in the asakusa area. It's like us with are Starbucks or dunkin donuts depending where you are from.

Ok... so this is what I found thus far!
Read Q&A #9
as it seems to address the two entities... http://www.tukijimasamoto.co.jp/faq.php?answer=1#answer9
I found that brand of Masamoto @http://www.tukijimasamoto.co.jp/
...and I found this brand Masamoto @http://www.masamoto-sohonten.co.jp/
It seems like both sites have headers on the 1st page of their sites disputing who is "original." Just reeks of bad blood...

The Kanji are different.

I was waiting for you to chime in! Thank you.
Ok... so now to determine who the higher quality one is.

I have a set of Masamoto Sohonten hongasumi knives (yanagiba, deba, and usuba.) I like them. There is nothing to complain about them.
It seems like Sohonten has a wider arrays of knives, e. g. very high-end to mid-range and various different finishes.
I don't think Masamoto Tsukiji sell much of their knives outside of Japan. I only can recall one store that carries them. I have several magazine articles about Misao Hirano, the owner. He is well respected.
