The reason a trailing stroke works is simple, the abrasive is not colliding with the edge so you have no impaction from the grit.

so when trailing is it important to keep the same angle as if u were leading with it or does it not matter as much?

Ideally you want to keep the same angle. There's a little more wiggle room for being sloppy when you strop.
