I use them in the kitchens i work in too. It is easy access and if you place them correctly then you wont ever have to worry about chipping your knives. This isnt a good feeling :/

I maintain web sites for a few area car dealers and they gave me some of their 100mph license plate magnets that are very strong. I padded them with duct tape and fastened them to the inside of some kitchen cabinet doors. It takes some effort to take the knives and heavy cleavers down. We have had them hanging for several years now and I've asked for more magnets for my new and growing collection.

about $5 for magnets, and not quite 2 bdft of wood ($5-$15), and about 2 hours for a 1 off.
