Looking for a Wa Petty

Sun May 12, 2013 8:50 am

I have been a regular visitor here. Looking for a nice Wa Petty. $150 price range. 150 MM, Dark colored Wa handle, Aogami, Damascus, or other high performing steel. I have 500, 1000,2000, and 5000 waterstones. Plus leather and balsa for stropping.
I already have a Richmond Laser in AEB-L, great knife, but I think I want to try a different steel.
Right now your in stock selection is pretty thin. I am in no hurry. I signed up for emails when certain knives come back in stock. Last email I got, it was out of stock again in 6 hours.
I have read several reviews, which are useless as the knives never seem to be in stock.
Let me know what you can do for me.
Anybody else wanna chime in? I am all ears.
Bob Rossi

That's what sucks about dealing with a popular retailer like Mark, everything sells out so damn quick! ;)

There's probably more. I know these don't meet all of your individual desires, but it doesn't seem that there are really too many knives offered here, or anywhere else for that matter, that meet all of your specifications, in stock or out. Personally I think the people running this place do a pretty awesome job keeping this place up, considering how hard to find, expensive, and exclusive the relationships with individual blacksmiths in Japan must be. Best of luck, hope you find what you're looking for.

Konosuke HD2 Wa-Petty 150mm all my criteria except light colored handle. If I had to buy one from the list, this would be it.
Konosuke HH 150mm Petty light colored handle, don't know whether it's 150 or 120 MM Swedish steel the description is confusing.
Kikuichi Swedish Warikomi Damascus Petty 150mm hits all my requirements except it's AEB-L, I want to try something else
Tanaka Damascus Petty 150mm again hits all my marks except the light colored handle.
The Shun? Really? They are over rated in my opinion, you can do better for the same $ or the same for less.
Masakage shimo petty 150mm, nice knife, but again the light colored handle.
Sakai Takayuki Damascus Wa-Petty 150mm, nice knife, again light colored handle, and AEB-L steel

Mad Rookie, how much more $ will make a significant difference? it's not a question of what I can afford, it's a question of what looks good to me, I really prefer the dark Wa handles, then getting the best value and performance for the $$.
I am not in the trade, I just like nice knives.

I agree 100 percent, Mark does a great job, and I am a repeat customer. As I said, I am in no hurry
so I can wait for some additional input before I decide.

Thanks for your input.

See if Mark can get a darker handle for one of those or have someone make one.

Actually, as much as I do think the Shun stuff is over priced, their new blue steel line is really nice.

I have one of their honesuki's from that line and it's super nice...albeit awfully short for a honesuki....but for a knife, it's great. Perfect F&F, great steel, ideal geometry....and the handle is very nice.

Other than that for the one's currently in stock, I'd buy the Tanaka or the Konosuke HD and have it rehandled.

If you can wait, get this one:

Thanks Adam, that's a great recommendation. I put my email address to notify me when the goko petty is back in stock.
Like I said, I am not in the trade, so there is no big rush.
